Welcome to the Rhode Island Statewide Rental Registry
Please note that the Rhode Island Rental Registry is currently not optimized for mobile devices. For the best experience, we recommend accessing the registry on a desktop or laptop computer. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your understanding.
Important Update: While the Rhode Island Department of Health does not plan on issuing any fines on October 1, 2024, it is important that you take action to register as soon as possible.
We are currently focused on educating landlords about this new requirement. We understand that landlords will need some time to schedule an inspection with a licensed lead inspector and to get a Certificate of Lead Conformance or lead certificate. For more information on how to get a lead certificate, please visit www.lead1978.com. Before we begin issuing fines, we will let the public know through updates on this webpage and social media.
Landlords should know that as of October 1, 2024, you will not be able to file for eviction for nonpayment of rent unless your property is registered in the Rhode Island Rental Registry and you provide the court with evidence of compliance, per the statute. If you are required to have a lead certificate, you will not be able to complete your registration without it.
To get started registering your rental property(s), please go to your dashboard.
DashboardIn accordance with Rhode Island General Law 34-18-58, all landlords are now required to register their rental properties with the Rhode Island Department of Health. This mandatory registry aims to ensure transparency, safety, and accountability in the rental market across the state.
Registering your rental property is not just a legal requirement - it's a step toward fostering safer and healthier living conditions for tenants. If your property was built before 1978, and is subject to lead hazard mitigation regulations, you must also submit proof of a valid lead certificate.
Please note the following deadlines:
1. Initial registration should be completed by October 1, 2024.
2. New property owners or landlords must register within 30 days of acquisition or leasing.
3. Annual re-registration by October 1 to update or confirm existing information.
Penalties for Non-Compliance
Failure to register or update your information can result in fines, starting at $50 per month and up to $1,000 per violation for repeated non-compliance. Please note that landlords who are not registered cannot proceed with eviction actions for nonpayment of rent.
